The Dangers of Consuming Unpasteurized Milk
Look, I know we are seeing an increase of Tik Tok influencers trying to influence their versions of an unproven healthy lifestyle, but please consult with your primary care doctor before you make drastic health changes in your life that you normally don’t do.
What is Unpasteurized Milk?
Everyone enjoys the idea of living on a farm and getting their milk fresh an from the local cow source. You can just picture the roosters as your daily alarm clock followed by the fog and the dewiness during your 5am coffee milk made straight from the source as a perfect wake up session. I get it entirely; however, it is important to be conscious of what and how you are consuming things. Unpasteurized milk (Raw Milk) is Milk that comes straight from the cow, sheep or goat to your cup that has not undergone pasteurization.
Containments of Unpasteurized Milk.
Unpasteurized milk contains all the natural nutrients that our bodies need to function properly such as Carbohydrates (lactose), fats, proteins, enzymes and all the natural occurring minerals and vitamins, But unfortunately it contains harmful pathogens (germs) similar to E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria and many other common pathogens and animal feces that contaminate the milk supply. Although these pathogens are normal in terms of unpasteurized milk. It is not normal to consume them.
What Happens to the body when consuming harmful bacteria?
Figure 1.1 Simplified Mechanism of consuming unpasteurized milk.
E.Coli lives in the intestines of people and animals naturally without causing harm to your body. (we are all working balls of bacteria) When consuming raw milk bacteria such as E. coli when it enters the gut, although your stomach is very acidic this bacterium is resistant to your stomach acid and finds that your gut is an essential place for it to live and reproduce, causing onset symptoms of:
Stomach pain, cramping or tenderness.
Straight vomit (projectile)
Loose bowels, blood in poop.
If you are having these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor after a day or two if this keeps happening.
Benefits of Pasteurization.
Pasteurization is the process of heating the milk at a temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes at a time. This essentially kills all the harmful bacteria that is in the milk and preserves the milks freshness. Let’s face it, projectile vomiting and loose bowls at the same time is not a great feeling. Pasteurization of milk provides the same nutritional benefits as unpasteurized milk just without all the bacteria that can give you the runs and potentially, according to the CDC causes future kidney failure or stroke.
All in all, please stop this bullshit. Pasteurization does not kill the nutrients and I’m not really sure why we are listening to Tik Tok influencers or anyone who isn’t farmer or has a biology degree cause in truth they do not have your best interest at heart.
So I don’t get fined……
